COMME des GARÇONS is a fashion brand founded by Japanese designers Rei kawakubo. It means “like a boy” in French, and thus made the 1980s the decade of Japanese avant-garde fashion. Since then, brands such as Martin Margiela, the master of avant-garde fashion, Ann Demeulemeester with his unique structure, and Dries Van Noten with his ethnic prints have all been influenced by COMME des GARÇONS.
Since it is a fashion brand that I like, I wanted to create an outdoor advertisement for this brand. It is a brand that shows perspective, power, energy, and philosophy about clothes, beyond being just a fashion brand. The contrast between the old building and accidentally fallen feather provides an avant-garde interpretation of COMME des GARÇONS' unique brand image.
COMME des GARÇONS has flagship stores in major fashion capitals such as Tokyo, London, Paris, NY, Seoul and Berlin.
This project focuses on the Berlin store’s website imagery. I used the motif of the “ant” as a metaphor for ourselves - diverse individuals of different ethnicities and backgrounds - coexisting in the avant garde, multicultural landscape of Berlin. The visuals also draw upon COMME des GARÇONS’s core design elements, including the “dot”, “organic curved patterns” and “avant garde motifs such as the bomb", the imagery reinterprets COMME des GARÇONS”s identity through the lens of Berlin.
